About Thomas H Mareci

Thomas H. Mareci, Ph.D. is Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of the University of Florida and an affiliate faculty member of the Departments of Physics and Biomedical Engineering. He received his doctoral degree in physical chemistry in 1982 at Oxford University for his work with Professor Ray Freeman on the measurement of nuclear magnetic resonance multiple-quantum spectroscopy. Dr. Mareci joined the faculty of the University of Florida in 1982 and, in early 1993, he was appointed the Director of the Center for Structural Biology, and founded the Advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy Facility in the McKnight Brain Institute of the University of Florida. He is a member of the U. S. National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, operated jointly by the University of Florida, Florida State University, and the Los Alamos National Lab, and he is helping to develop the in vivo magnetic resonance program of this national lab. He has published over 110 journal articles and 12 book chapters and is a frequent reviewer for journals and federal granting agencies.

Research Profile

Dr. Mareci’s research interests include the mapping of the brain structure using translational water diffusion based magnetic resonance imaging, and brain function using blood oxygenation dependent contrast magnetic resonance imaging. These methods are applied to the study of changes in nervous tissue structure and function following injury or neurodegeneration, and mapping of stimulated electric current in the brain.
