We are delighted to welcome Dr. David Baekey, who takes on a new role in the department as an instructional assistant professor.
Dr. David Baekey is a new lecturer in the department of neuroscience here at the University of Florida. His research has focused on the neural control of respiratory and cardiovascular function, particularly the brainstem and pontine circuits that shape breathing. He uses techniques such as multielectrode recording and in vivo/in situ preparations to understand how these circuits generate and regulate rhythmic behavior. He received his Doctorate in Medical Sciences (Physiology) from the University of South Florida in 2003, completed postdoctoral training at Case Western Reserve University, and held a Leverhulme Visiting Fellowship at the University of Bristol. He previously served as an assistant professor in UF’s College of Veterinary Medicine from 2011 to 2018. Dr. Baekey lives in Gainesville with his wife and young child. He enjoys paddling local springs, exploring trails and parks, and has recently joined a local pinball league. He’s excited to join the biomedical neuroscience online master’s program and looks forward to meeting everyone!
