Welcome Dr. Daniel Gray, new assistant professor

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Daniel Gray, who joins the department as a New Assistant Professor.

He received his B.S. in Psychology from the University of California, Davis, and his Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Arizona, where he trained under Dr. Carol Barnes. He then completed his postdoctoral training in the Department of Physiology at UCLA with Dr. Lindsay De Biase. Throughout his career, Dr. Gray has combined neuroanatomical, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches in aging nonhuman primate and rodent models to identify factors associated with preserved cognitive and sensory function in the healthy aged brain. At UF, his research will focus on non-neuronal mechanisms of cognitive resilience, with an emphasis on how glial regulation of extracellular matrix–synapse dynamics helps maintain cognitive health across the lifespan. He is a Simons Foundation Transition to Independence Fellow in the Simons Collaboration on Plasticity in the Aging Brain.

Originally from Mexico, and with deep family roots in the Yucatán peninsula, Daniel values staying connected to its culture and traditions. Outside the lab, he enjoys staying active through recreational sports, particularly basketball, and teaching himself recipes from cuisines around the world. He is excited to join the UF neuroscience community and looks forward to building new collaborations and connecting with colleagues both inside and outside the lab.
