Welcome Dr. Alexandria Marciante, New Assistant Professor

We are delighted to welcome Dr. Alexandria Marciante, who joins the department as a New Assistant Professor.

———-

Hello! I am Alex Marciante, and I am a new Assistant Professor in the Department of Neuroscience here at UF. My expertise is in the neural control of breathing with a focus on how different factors influence breathing stability. Specifically, we are interested in how human genetics (i.e., APOE4) and neural injury and neurodegeneration impair respiratory neuroplasticity. We are interested in how these factors differentially impact the neural system governing breathing in males versus females, as well as across the daily rest/active cycle and the lifespan. The goal is to gain mechanistic insights that allow us to implement precision interventions in neuromodulation-based neurotherapeutics (i.e., acute intermittent hypoxia protocols, neurostimulation, etc.) that improve respiratory function.

I received my bachelor’s degree in biology from Texas A&M University (Class of 2015) and my Doctorate degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in 2019. I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Florida in the Department of Physical Therapy under the direction of Dr. Gordon Mitchell. I’m extremely excited to join the neuroscience community at UF and look forward to working with the students, faculty and staff! Outside of work, I enjoy time with my husband and daughter and being active with my dog, Moose, watching sports (Go Gators!), and exploring the many springs and beaches in Florida!
