We are delighted to welcome Dr. Kimberly Alonge, who joined the department as an Associate Professor on September 1, 2025.
Before joining us, Dr. Alonge served as an Assistant Professor of Medicinal Chemistry and in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Nutrition at the University of Washington, where she was also the Program Director for Matrix Biology at the UW Medicine Diabetes Institute.
Dr. Alonge’s research focuses on the brain’s extracellular matrix and how reorganization of matrix structures – particularly perineuronal nets – influences neuronal circuit activity in both healthy and diseased states. She integrates advanced imaging and liquid mass spectrometry techniques to characterize spatial changes in chondroitin sulfate–glycosaminoglycan (CS-GAG) sulfation in rodent and primate models, with the goal of translating these findings to human systems.
Her research has been supported by the NIH (DP2, R21), the Department of Defense, the American Diabetes Association, and the Murdock Trust.
Please join us in giving Dr. Alonge a warm welcome! We’re excited to see how her expertise and vision will enhance our research and collaborative efforts.
